Drive to Detroit Challenge: Mid-Day Update

Sunday, January 13th, 2013

After 4.5 hours and 320 miles of traveling we find ourselves stopped for Subway on the road between St. Louis and Indianapolis.

I took the reins for the first shift in the driver’s seat. Remarkably, this 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel is accomplishing 32-33mpg on highway roads while going 70mph. Outside temperatures are around 25 degrees, but a combination of automatic climate control, heated seats, and heated steering wheel are keeping Aaron and myself very comfortable.

Currently we have just under 500 miles left to Detroit, but the trip computer is only saying that we have 430 miles remaining in the tank, which makes me more concerned by the minute.

Morale is high, with Aaron and I setting the XM radio to Alt Rock, which provides us with uninterrupted music the whole way. Being the data nerds we are,  the Porsche Computer Module (PCM) provides us enough vehicle telemetry to discuss the entire way including travel time, distance, fuel consumption, tire pressure, average speed, and more.

Despite some scary numbers, I am confidant we will reach Detroit with fuel to spare. Check our the #DrivetoDetroit conversation over on Twitter for more up to the minute details.

Drive to Detroit: The Rig

Friday, January 4th, 2013

With the #DrivetoDetroit just over a week away, we are looking at a grueling 760+ mile one-day road trip. As with any road trip, it is not only important where you are going, but what you are taking there.

With winter weather always looming, a deadline to make, and the desire to spend the 11+hours in something exciting, there was only one vehicle we could choose.

The 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel.

With a style that is distinctly Porsche, the Cayenne Diesel will provide all the space and comfort we will need on our journey to The Motor City.

Speaking of motors, the Cayenne Diesel provides a pretty impressive one. The 3.0l 6 Cylinder diesel engine provides 240 horsepower, which is enough to push the vehicle to 60 mph in just 7.2 seconds. While that may be plenty of power, the real figure that stands out is the road-buckling 406 lb-ft. of torque that it generates, which will provide us with enough power to tow our houses with us, if we decided it was necessary.Power and torque aside, there is one statistic that is most important on this trip: MPG. As we attempt to make the entire trip from KC to Detroit on just a single tank of Diesel fuel. This is where the Cayenne’s amazing 29 MPG highway number will come into play:

Assuming we can average 27mpg for the entire 26.4 gallon tank, we should have an estimated range of 712 miles. This is unfortunately less than the estimated 763 miles between here and the Cobo Center in downtown, Detroit. Thus we will need to do everything in our power to average 29 mpg for the whole trip, including packing light, infrequent stops, and ease on the throttle.

We suppose that if we have to spend 11 straight hours in a car that, it should be in something as luxurious and full of technology as the Cayenne’s interior. Featuring heated & powered leather seats, Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports for power, Satellite Radio, and Navigation, we should have plenty of amenities to keep us plugged in and relaxed on our journey.

The Porsche Drive to Detroit 2013

Friday, January 4th, 2013

Aristocrat Motors is ringing in the New Year by stepping it up a notch! To provide our customers with the most in-depth coverage of the new luxury and high-performance models coming out for 2013, we are sending a team to the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, MI in what we have dubbed The Porsche Drive to Detroit.

The Team: Our social media representative Kris Nielsen (@KrisNielsenKC) and the Vice-President of The Social Media Club of Kansas City , Aaron Thacker (@Yourdp) will be driving to the show while tweeting along the way. Fans of cars and road trips alike are encouraged to attend!

The Car: Every great road trip needs a great vehicle, so we will be taking the 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel, a high-luxury, high-performance SUV with a knack for sipping fuel (29mpg).

The Challenge: In addition to tweeting and posting experiences, challenges, and more along the way, we will be attempting to travel the entire 763 miles to Detroit on a single tank of fuel. With the Porsche’s estimated range around 700 miles, this will prove to be quite the exercise in driving efficiently.

Join the drive by using the Twitter hashtag #DrivetoDetroit , or by visiting the Aristocrat Motors Facebook page at .
